Prof. Giuseppe Loianno

Giuseppe Loianno is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he directs the Agile Robotics and Perception Lab (https://arplaboratory.github.io/). He is also affiliated with the Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research (BAIR) Lab and the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS). Before joining UC Berkeley in 2025, he was an associate professor at NYU and, prior to that, a research scientist and team leader at the GRASP Lab at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award 2022, the DARPA Young Faculty Award 2022, the IEEE/RSJ IROS Toshio Fukuda Young Professional Award 2022 for contributions to perception-based navigation for agile autonomous aerial and ground robots, the Goddard Junior Faculty Fellowship 2022, and the Best Associate Editor Award from the IEEE/ICRA Conference Editorial Board 2022. He currently serves as a Senior Editor for the IEEE/RSJ IROS conference 2023–2025 and IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters, as well as Associate Editor for several leading robotics journals, including IEEE Transactions on Robotics, the International Journal of Robotics Research, IEEE Transactions on Field Robotics, and Frontiers in Robotics and AI. He also chairs the IEEE RAS Robotics Foundations Cluster and the IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Aerial Robotics and Unmanned Aerial Systems. His work has been featured in leading international news and magazines such as IEEE Spectrum, Popular Science, Scientific American, TechCrunch, MIT Technology Review, and Quartz.
