Title:

The Landscape of Quantum Computing Today

Abstract:

Quantum computing poses a threat to traditional types of cryptography, but how far away is that threat? This talk will give a discuss what kind of technologies need to develop to create such a quantum computer and compare them to the technology we have today. To overcome problems of errors and noise, we will need tremendous amounts of extra hardware for error correction. Getting to a quantum computer of this size will require long-term development, and to maintain this development likely requires us to find some application of near-term quantum computers. However, many of these applications are currently unproven.

Bio:

Sam is a PhD student researching the costs of quantum attacks on different kinds of cryptography. He has published work analyzing the complexity of quantum attacks on elliptic curves, isogenies, AES, and lightweight block ciphers.
