Title:Applications of AI in Smart Cities and Healthcare
Abstract:Applications of AI in smart cities and healthcare need to be safe, secure, accurate, and robust. We are investigating and developing deep-learning (DL) based methods that work with practical systems. Our research is exploring challenges associated with accomplishing real-time interaction between physical objects, data processing, communications, DL-inferencing, edge computing, and actuation. The studies are based on video monitoring using the smart-city COSMOS testbed deployed in New York City and on videos of robotic-assisted surgeries and peripheral edema. Real-time latency targets are highly dependable on the details of a use case, and truly fast responses cannot be achieved by off-the-shelf AI methods. To target very low latencies, we explore the customization of methods for data collection, communication, DL inference, and integration with the rest of the physical systems.
Bio:Zoran Kostic is a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at Columbia University in New York City. Zoran completed his Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Rochester and his Dipl. Ing. degree at the University of Novi Sad. He worked in the industry with Bell Labs, AT&T Research, The Mathworks, and Broadcom where he did research and advanced product development and was in leadership positions.

Zoran's expertise spans signal processing, digital communications, wireless and mobile systems, multimedia, system-on-chip (SoC) development, and applications of parallel computing. His present research covers applications of deep learning in smart cities, medicine, and health using Internet of Things systems and physical data analytics. His work comprises research, system architectures, software and hardware development, which resulted in a notable publication record, three dozen patents, and critical contributions to successful products. He has experience in Intellectual Property consulting.

Dr. Kostic is an active member of the IEEE, and he has served as an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Communications and IEEE Communications Letters.
