Abstract: | Underwater Optical Wireless Communications (UOWC) is the only wireless technology able to transmit data at high-speed under the water. Thus it is of paramount importance. Of course, UOWC demonstrations and prototypes are much more demanding than the terrestrial counterpart, mostly because real operation in seawaters involves a very challenging environment. Here we review the key features of UOWC and the basic design criteria; we then present some relevant experimental measurements and the realization of UOWC modems. We finally discuss the UOWC 10 Mbit/s sea-trial in Spezia harbour, with real-time Ethernet transmission over 10 m. |
