World Space Week: An Open Letter to the Next Space Generation
As we conclude World Space Week, at TII we are reflecting on how the UAE’s bold space ambitions are inspiring the next era of exploration. In this open letter, our Chief Researcher for Propulsion and Space, Dr Elias Tsoutsanis, shares his vision for the future - from advanced propulsion systems to intelligent spacecraft, and the crucial role today’s young innovators will play in tomorrow’s missions:
Dear future explorers,
When the UAE launched the Emirates Mars Mission in 2020 to study the atmosphere of another planet, the world witnessed a young nation achieve what few others had ever attempted. Soon, with the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt, that same spirit of ambition will carry the UAE even farther, venturing into one of the most challenging and uncharted regions of our solar system.
These aren’t just milestones, their invitations. They signal to a new generation of scientists, engineers, and dreamers that the boundaries of exploration are expanding, and you are called to help define them.
As Chief Researcher for the Propulsion and Space Research Centre at TII, I have the privilege of working with brilliant minds committed to building the future of space. In that work, one belief drives us above all: that curiosity is the most powerful force we can invest in. That is why our research isn’t just about solving today’s challenges; it’s about building the foundation for the future discoveries you will lead.
We are developing advanced propulsion systems because the spacecraft of your generation will need to go farther, faster, and more sustainably than ever before. We are researching intelligent engine systems, so the machines you send into space can learn, adapt, and survive in environments beyond human reach.
We’re reimagining autonomy, spacecraft systems, and electric propulsion to support the long-duration, deep-space missions that will define the decades ahead.
And as orbits grow more crowded, we’re working to ensure space remains safe and sustainable so that the future you’ll inherit and the journeys you take are not only possible but protected.
All of this is in service of one goal: to hand you the tools, knowledge, and momentum to go farther than we can imagine today.
You might still be in school, at university, or just beginning to think about what your future holds. But already, the future of space belongs to you - and we’re building it with you in mind.
So, keep asking questions. Keep imagining what’s next. And when you're ready to lead, know that the launchpad is waiting.
As we mark the end of this year’s World Space Week, let this be your invitation: to learn boldly, to lead bravely, and to help shape a future that reaches beyond Earth.
The next era of exploration begins with you.
