Title:

Machine Learning-Based Channel Estimation in RIS-Aided Wireless Systems

Abstract:

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which can enable smart and reconfigurable wireless environments, will be used to improve capacity, coverage, and energy efficiency in future generation wireless systems. As in other wireless systems, channel estimation is a fundamental problem in an RIS-aided wireless system. A large number of fully-passive antenna elements in an RIS and/or at the transmitter and/or at the receiver, the channel estimation problem becomes very challenging. In this talk, I will present a channel estimation algorithm based on variational inference and unsupervised learning, for an RIS-aided single-user single-input multiple-output (SIMO) system with fully passive RIS elements to separately estimate the user device-to-RIS and RIS-base station channels. The solution is flexible and takes into account the sparsity of mmWave channels. Also, the solution approach is general, and in principle, can be used for many types of channels. for I will showcase the effectiveness of our channel estimation framework in terms of channel capacity and approximation error.
