Title:Digital Twins for Wireless Networks, Bridging Real-World Deployments and Wireless Network Emulation
Abstract:Wireless network emulators, as Digital Twins of real systems, are becoming a staple of wireless networks design and evolution. Creating an accurate digital copy of a real system is critical to study and analyze its performance, and to design and validate robust and reliable solutions in a risk-free environment before applying them to the physical world. In this talk, we will walk through the methodology and steps to enable high-fidelity large-scale emulation-based digital twins of wireless networks. We implement these steps on Colosseum, the world’s largest wireless network emulator with hardware-in-the-loop, demonstrating unprecedented accuracies with above 98% resemblance in network parameters compared to the real-world scenarios. We will then discuss a few exemplary twinning scenarios with application in network design and performance optimization. Finally, we will touch on real-time twinning capabilities, and live-link communication between the twins as an enabler of applications such as AI-driven continuous analysis, control and performance optimization of dynamic wireless networks such as those involving UAVs.
Bio:Pedram Johari is a Principal Research Scientist at the Institute for Wireless Internet of Things at Northeastern University, Boston, MA. Pedram received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University at Buffalo in 2018 where he served as a Research Assistant Professor and Adjunct Lecturer in 2018 and 2019. His research interest is in the fusion of AI and future generation of open and programmable wireless networks, focusing on the design and development of full protocol-stack digital twins as risk-free innovation and exploration environments for AI-driven wireless network solutions. Pedram has executive entrepreneurial experience in the wireless IoT domain, is an IEEE and ACM member, and is the co-editor-in-chief of the Elsevier Journal on Software Impacts.
